Internet Safety: Protecting Your Kids from Violent Websites
As parents, we try to control what television shows and movies our children watch, and what video games they play. But, what about the websites they view?
Violent websites are scattered throughout the Internet and can easily be found with a single search query. From YouTube videos to bomb-making sites, our kids have access to a plethora of inappropriate content that is violent or may advocate violence, even with web filters in place.
Here are some easy steps parents can take to protect their children from viewing violent content online:
- Learn the technology. Take the time to learn all about your computer and its web browsers. Whenever possible, enable parental controls.
- Keep the home computer in a public area of your home.
- Start an open dialogue with your child about Internet safety.
- Stay informed. Find out exactly what technology your child is using and view the websites he/she frequents the most.
- Show interest in what your child is doing. Ask questions about their friends, school activities, and online experiences.

I have 3 kids, 12, 14 and 18. Make sure that parental controls are in without question. Go further and ensure that a filter is in place to stop porn sites etc. Don't assume your kids won't be curious. They will be and are. I have the Norton Add On Pak alive and well on our system having learned the hard way just how easy porn and violence is accessed. Google 2 words (ie naked women) and it's all there and leads everywhere. I was slow to realise just how easy porn is available and was being accessed by my 12 and 18 yr old (males). My daughter 14 I'm not sure but do not dismiss curiousity.
